In 2019, President Buhari will be battling the trio of Atiku, Obasanjo and Jonathan. Interestingly, the 3 major characters in PDP's 16 years of misrule. There never was an election period where all these 3 were on the same side. If you add IBB, TY Danjuma and all ranking Nigerian kleptocrats, the list becomes even more interesting.

A defeat of those forces will send them to political retirement and oblivion that's long overdue. With Buhari following suit in 2023, that will draw the curtain on post-civil war Nigerian leaders and their stranglehold on Nigerian politics.

All the two opposing camps are known quantities. They have been tested and have all been found wanting. 16 years of impunity, corruption and profligacy versus 4 years of subpar performance and nepotism. 2019 is a contest of two failures, small and big. God did not intend to make our choices so easy when we go to the polling booth in 2019, unlike the case in 2015.

That notwithstanding, we should not lose sight at the bigger picture. Bringing the PDP back will be a huge miscalculation. In vain are all our struggles in all those 16 years of PDP's misrule, in vain are all the sacrifices paid by millions of our countrymen and women. You don't punish a lesser evil by bringing back a bigger one. A party whose hands are muddled in all the infamies of this country post-1998 should not be entrusted with the search for solutions.

The antidote to APC's 4 year-old failure is not to bring back a 16 year old failure that has shown no remorse over its past crimes against the good people of this country. The antidote to APC's 4 year-old failure in the face of a resurgent PDP is to contain the lesser failure and try to steer the sail of this country towards progress.

But beyond this ritual of elect-and-regret, we should pause and reflect on why our challenges remain intractable even after power changes hands from one party to another, and under the successive incompetences of 4 different Nigerian presidents since.

Copied.
