Umuoji is a town located in idemili north area of anambra state in south east region, which has about twenty five villages in it, there is one of cultures which made umuoji to be popular in the whole south eastern region especially in anambra state which is known as (UZO IYI) translated in English as way of an oath, this event normally takes place in march in every afor (Third day of the week in Igbo) first Sunday of every year.  This event always drew multitudes of people from different states and Umuojians, at large together, both people from abroad and also.  It is an event that makes it possible to see many people especially those you haven't seen for a long time, it could be your relations, friend, classmate, age mate etc.

On that wonderful day all roads lead to where we called umuoji stadium, well decorated, organized and playing one of our native musics like (umuoji obodo dike) i. e.  umuoji the town of warriors and so on.  See group of peoples with there different attires, then igwe) i. e.  king and his cabinets i. e.  (nze na ozo's) titled men and women, eminent personalities, wealthy, honored, respected, lions and lioness, actors and warriors of umuojians, there all presence to Grace and witness the occasion as it goes.

Then there is one masquerade will called (EZE MMUO) i. e.  kings of masquerade, l mearnt to understand is first to come out and welcome people before any other ones.  Each village has its and it is a mandatory for the whole villages in the community to come and show theirs, normally it does one after another, each village with their banners which identified village that wanted to parade.

This is how it will continue until the whole twenty five villages appears, then after entertainment follows, interviews, word of encouragement from the king or any of his cabinet as  a conclusion and that will draw the Curtin.

Frankly speaking it is always an occasion that is not good to miss as far as I am concerned, please I am not advertising but it is real.

ARTICULATION
The motive is just for pleasure only, nothing beyond that.

SUGGESTION
To continue be in existence, I mean it is a continuity because it is what our forefathers have left for us as a memorial to be celebrated from generation to generation even an unborn child now will grow and witness.  But not withstanding it is one culture that made umuoji to be popular if i am not mistaken, Because there is one Igbo adage that says (OKU AGUNYELU NWATA NA AKA ADIGHI EREGBU YA) i. e.  That a fire given to a child on his hand cannot harm him

Perfect

This is cultural heritage of the umuoji people.
I was in this town(Umuazu village) last two years for traditional marriage.
I really had fun.

Perfect

I was in Uzoyi Umuoji in 2012, I really had fun experiencing this festival. Among all the masquerades the one I like most is Egbenoba Ano-ogu village because I like their costume and warrior movement, they are really unique. Another masquerade that comes close and uniqueness is Atumma Amoji they have a lot of followers and patterns of jumping up and shouting in unison  OhHH!! Pka, pka pka OhHH!!... these guys can raise a lot of dust, if you happen to come to Uzoiyi make sure you cover your nose before Atumma Amoji enters the stage.

okeke

I am Kingsley okeke from Caleb university, the festival  was an interesting one with all the masquerades dancing and displaying different dance moves. it is good to see that we Nigerians are promoting our Nigerian culture.

Perfect

Okeke, are you from Umuoji? which year's own did you attend? Uzoiyi last year was really fun, I expected Ajaagbagu-mgba Irumkpu to carry the day in that Uzoiyi going by it name (Agu [lion]) but it didn't happen that way, most important of all, we had fun.

Ugochukwu

Just for the records, Umuoji has 23 villages and not 25. Umuoji is known as Igwulube Okodu and not Igwurube. "Iyi" in Uzoiyi means stream and not oath and the iyi being referred to is Ideakpulu stream, during the festival it is barricaded so no one goes there to fetch water. The festival ushers in farming season for the year and that is the sacrifice made to the gods of bountiful harvest which was believed then to be the "Ideakpulu" stream. It is celebrated on the "uka afor" in the month of march every year. The festival has been reformed into a carnival in recent times though the traditionalists still perform that barricading of the stream (igechi omu) and sacrifices to the gods as they believe it still works for them.

@ Ugochukwu
Thank you for helping to make things clearer, some guys here are born in the town and travel once in a year or two years.  So online forum like Cokoye.com helps to inform and educate our people on many things. For example, the lady that started this thread is from Dimboko village in Umuoji, and visited the Uzoiyi once and liked it, hence starting this thread.

Oji Kwenu!

Please correct the heading as rightly stated by UgoChukwu. Our dialect is very unique and we must preserve it. I don't know whether I will call inferiority complex that makes our people shy away from our dialect by changing all the 'Ls' in our dialect to 'Rs'. Listen to anybody from Ogidi or Onicha and you won't hear such changes. As we are promoting our culture we should as well promote our dialect lest it becomes extinct.

Uzoiyi has been transformed into a carnival of international repute thanks to innovations and new ideas injected into it as 2021 and 2022 edition showcased. 2021 and 2022 edition can be watched on youtube. There are tremendous transformation starting from the arena itself to the masquerades of all the villages. Some villages changed their masquerades and their costumes to appear more colourful than before.
