Silica gel can help it stay fresh

Though it would be really harmful if you actually ate the silica packages, you can use it to keep your food from going bad. Put it in your vegetable door or keep it with your spices and herbs. This can help keep it fresh and make it last longer.

It may also help avoid corrosion in your kitchen tools when stored with utensils and pans.

Eating silica gel

Apparently, Silica gel is actually not that bad for somebody if you were to accidently eat it, though you need to not eat it just to do so. The gel is non-toxic and mostly harmless, though it is not digested. When it comes out, it looks pretty much the same though.

If you or a kid eats a lot of silica gel packets, that could be dangerous. It may have choking problems and can trigger vomiting. Call 800-222-1222 to get a hold of the American Association of Poison Control Centers if you need help and have eaten too much.
