Who can forget the child identity crime case of Olivia McNamara that occurred in 2012? She applied for her first student credit card twice but it got denied both times. This was alarming to her so she dug around to find out the root cause.  Sure enough, she was a victim of ID theft.  Someone had stolen her SSN when she was 9 years old and run up an enormous debt -- $1.5 million.  Yes, million.  Wow.  She was totally unaware of it until she was about to start her freshman year. The criminal used her Social Security Number to create false identities and also created 42 accounts. Even after months of uncovering this criminal act, her credit card application still gets rejected to this day.  Her parents could have prevented this from happening for the price of one school lunch each month.
Did you know that there are 50,000 child id crime cases reported annually? This area of id crime is increasing by leaps and bounds because of two major reasons:
(1) children have clean records – making it easy for the criminal to create accounts and acquire loans;
(2) the criminal goes undetected for years -- as parents don’t take effective measures for child identity theft protection.   The child only discovers it once they go to college and apply for credit.  By that time it’s hard to catch the criminal.

Olivia McNamara case is really a sad one; she is paying for what isn't her own making but as a result of parent negligence.
But don't you think that popularity of this case suppose to help her solve this problem?
