Nigeria Poem: THE STRIKE

They said the incoming strike
   Will
Wipe out memories of all other strikes.
They said the incoming strike
   Will
Force the government to revert to old prices
They said the incoming strike
   Will involve
   NNPC
   PENGASSAN
   NUT
   TUC
   NLC
   SON
Independent and private oil marketers
Who will not lift fuel
Come Friday night
When the strike begins
And ends
When everyone
Being hungry and broke
Will discontinue the strike
First from
The banking sector
Whose operations
Excludes government interest rates
Which are often dovetailed
By open market operators
Whose survival hinges
On the mercies of
Homeward bound
Passers-bye
Who makes
Their homeward shopping
Picking from wares
On the roadside
Picking from wares
In our ever constant traffic jams
Picking up commuters
Whose handouts
Make up our conductors’
Daily wage.
