(Mt 4,12-23)

JESUS ??begins his preaching with this exhortation: "Turn from your sin and turn to God ..." Perhaps, indeed without perhaps, we priests too are called to begin our homily today by saying: "Brothers and sisters: let's convert and believe in the Gospel!". There are Christians only by name, without having the spirit of Christ. I remember that once a woman said to me after my preaching: "Thanks, father, for your catechesis because, after years of attending daily mass, only now I understand that I am not a Christian. ” It is true that many men and women are church-goers, but they do nor belong to God. They believe more in the power of money than in the omnipotence of God's love ; they believe more in their human abilities than in supernatural ones.

Often from the mouths of many Christians I hear people say: "God forgives, but I don't ... I believe in divorce ... in gay marriage ...". There is no need for the Sacrament of confession for the forgiveness of sins, just say : "Lord, forgive me ..." The important thing is to believe in God, it doesn't matter if he is the God of Catholics or of another religion ... I believe in God, but not in the Church".

In the Church there is a lot of relativism today. Anything goes. There is a lot of false goodness. There are priests who are not pastors of Christian communities, but only presidents of human associations.
There are priests who are widely followed because they preach an easygoing Gospel. There are priests who  do not preach Jesus Christ crucified. There is a lot of theatricality in our liturgies.
May the Lord convert us to the Gospel of Truth and Charity! Amen. Alleluia.
(P. Lorenzo Montecalvo of the Vocationist Fathers)
