Most people get their computer with Internet Explorer already installed and set to all defaults. The default setting is what Microsoft calls the "recommended values." These options are not always best to use. One size does not always for everyone. But how to change the settings and what does it all? I'm glad you asked ...

In this article I'll take you step by step through these values to explain them to you. Open a new browser window before, so you can follow these steps as you read the article. At the top of the browser window, click "Tools" then "Internet Options."

The first page you see is the General tab. The first option you have is where will your home page. Write http://cokoye.com. Only joking. This is our website. Choose a web site that you want your browser to open each time you connect. If you have a favorite search engine, which put in place. If you have a home page into that. Hit apply when you have done this and it will be your home page from now. Each time you press the start button on the top of your browser will automatically go to that page.

The next option you have is "delete cookies." There is much said about how to manage cookies and what they do online. But for the purposes of this article I will simply say that the cookies store information like websites where you want to register instead of typing a user name and password each time. There are other uses for cookies and hope to have time to write about this in another article. If you delete cookies, you will need to access websites you use often and do not remember your user name, etc.

The next button says "delete files". These are temporary files Internet Explorer stores on your hard drive so that if you go back to them will load faster because the images and other files downloaded. Later reach another area with a configuration that will help you manage this. You can go ahead and delete these files if you want and you must ".

The next button is called "Settings." Click this button now. He says: "Check for newer versions of stored pages ..." Then it gives you several options. By clicking "Every visit to page" will cause pages to load slower because instead of entering the temporary Internet files to the cache files, it queries the server for the latest version of the files on that page.

"Every time I open Internet Explorer" means the first time you visit that website, "this session" to search for a new version of the page. After that, it will refer to the cached page on your hard disk. "Automatically" means that Internet Explorer to stop driving for you and that is the recommended setting. "Never" means that you always use the cached version on your hard disk instead of checking for newer versions.

I recommend either auto or never, because if you want to check for new versions of a page all you have to do is press shift and click the Update button on the browser toolbar.

The next configuration option is the amount of space to allow temporary Internet files. Five to twenty megabytes is enough. Internet Explorer tends to override the choice here anyway. Bill knows best I guess.

The next button is "move folder." Do not click on it. Back slowly and do not touch that button. Sends nuclear missiles in several countries of minor importance. Seriously, move the location of temporary Internet files is not a good idea. The next button, "view files" is pretty boring and not have to do anything here. The same is true of "objects of sight." These three things can be left alone.

Go ahead and click OK for us to return to the general tab. You will see the next option is on the history of the computer. Now this is a personal choice. You know how to click on links above are of a different color that you have not clicked on? Well, the story recalls that for you so you know which pages you have or have not visited. It also records the history of all web sites that you or anyone else on your computer has visited. In the address bar drop-down arrow that shows all sites that have been is put there by the "history" option. It is also used if you have enabled auto-complete Web addresses you are typing in the address bar.

You can set this to the number of days to save history. If you have children, you can access these files to see where they go on the Internet too. If you are using a computer at work you may want to set this in one day. To the right of where you enter the number of days is the button to erase history now. Computer experts can still find his story. This is not absolute.

Next button is "colors." The best position is "use windows colors, but the experiment, if desired. Next button is" sources "and if you click that, it's pretty self-explanatory. This is where you choose the font size. That is in the "vision" of your browser instead of the "tools" area we are now. "Languages" is also self-explanatory. "Accessibility" is where you can change the settings if you have special needs.

Ok, now let's go to the Security tab. "Media" is the best scenario for most users and probably is already there. Be careful when changing the security settings that you do not understand. Click Custom Level. " Scroll down. If there are things that are absolutely safe and want to change, then do it. But if you are unsure, do not change.

See that when we first came to the tab was selected "Internet" icon in the window at the top. You can also click on "Local Internet" and do the same for your settings there. This is for your home network if you have one. The icons beside them are "trusted sites" and "Restricted Sites". You can add sites to any area you want to allow or not allow, no matter what other settings are on the computer. This is a way to block your child to visit a particular website.

Go to the next tab at the top called "privacy." Now this is another area in which we must be careful and understand what is going to change first. This is probably already set to "medium" that is fine for most users. The "Import" button probably does not apply to you. Click the "advanced" button. Everything here is probably gray, except the choice of cookies commission check.

automatic configuration means that you accept the first and third party cookies. That means that you accept cookies from the website you are visiting and any other websites that the website you are visiting has chosen to set cookies on your hard drive as well as advertisers or others who want to track the habits of user.

Click "Override automatic cookie handling", then check "block" to third-party cookies and block certain types of spyware or adware that is placed on your system. To block cookies from a particular website or if you want to allow only cookies from specific Web sites, here is where you add the web sites.

Then go to the Content tab. Again, this is an area you need to know what is going to change before changing anything. You can click "enable" content advisor. The first scroll bar can be changed to block types of content. First you can start with the language types you want to block, then nudity, sex and violence, click on the icons at the window with the slider. The "more information" button will help you understand this more.

The "approved sites" at the top will allow you to enter the sites you want access, regardless of the settings you just made with the slider. On the General tab, you must click to allow web sites that have no rating, because not all websites are ranked. You can also check the box that says a supervisor, you can use a password to access restricted web sites.

If you share your computer with your kids, this is an option where you can visit restricted websites, but can not. Be careful when setting this password. If you forget, you can not change these settings at any time. If you lose the password, you have to know how to get into the registry to get it removed. Unless you know about the rating systems do not have to worry about the two buttons at the bottom of this tab or the "tab" Advanced. "

Click OK for the changes and to enter a password if you decided you wanted one. If you understand about "certificates" and "editors", then you do not need my help here. If you do not understand, leave the buttons alone.

Click the "AutoComplete" button. This is fairly easy to understand. AutoComplete works to help you avoid typing the same information on formS and in the address bar of Internet Explorer. You can also delete the above information here. Click Prompt me to save passwords and asked each time you enter a password if you want Internet Explorer to remember your password for this website so you do not have to type it every time. I do not recommend that enable banks and financial remember passwords.

"My Profile" is where you enter information about yourself and use that whenever you asked for your profile on a website or can be automatically accessed some time-saving applications.

Now click the tab "Connections." If you are connected to the web and reading this article, then it is safe to assume your setup is correct here and should leave them alone.

Click the Programs tab at the top. There are drop down menus to help you set the default program for each of the tasks. This is a personal choice that will allow you to configure your default web browser, HTML editor, and email program.

Now for the "advanced" tab at the top. Afraid eh? No, this area is mostly personal choices and their options are about the serious consequences of the settings in "content", "privacy" and "security."

Most options should be left where they are the default values. I'm just going to talk here than you can change. Do not check the script error notification EACH unless you want to be bothered much. Not all scripts on each web page is error free and there will be plenty of them pop if you check the appropriate box.

Notify me when downloads complete if checked will give you a sound when a download is done. Underline links is a personal choice. We always leave together, so I know when I see a link. The closest is a choice of whether to use AutoComplete.

You can scroll through the rest of the options and change the things you already understand. Likely if you do not understand an option that needs to be changed anyway. I hope this article was helpful for you and helped you personalize your settings rather than Bill Gates do it for you.
