Spam is the Internet equivalent of junk mail. Spam is defined as email sent to people without their consent or permission. The addresses of the recipients are often harvested from Usenet or web pages, obtained from databases, or simply guessed by using common names and domains.

Spam is sent to promote almost any product or service ranging from "adult" products logo design for websites. It is also used by hackers to spread viruses or links to dangerous websites that are used to collect your personal information such as credit card or passwords for sites like eBay or PayPal. For the average user of these messages appear genuine. Even the bond has a real domain name you seek. This technique is known as "phishing."

Here are some smart strategies and tips you can use to begin to reduce spam and improve the security of your email.

- Configure your antivirus software to automatically scan incoming mail for viruses. Email is still widely used to distribute malware. Be sure to keep your anti virus software definitions up to date.
- If you are someone who often sign up for "extras" or anything else in setting the Internet via a separate email account for this purpose. Accounts from providers such as Yahoo!, Hotmail and Gmail from Google have generous storage space as standard.
- If sites do not accept e-mail without the above services then use a free disposable email as Sneakemail - http://www.sneakemail.com.
- If you send an e-mail to a blog or website then presented in a way that is recognizable only by a human. For example, if your email is then johndoe@hotmail.com charge of "johndoe at hotmail.com".
- Never open a message from an address that does not recognize - always remove it immediately. This is especially true if there is an attachment. Never respond to a message as this only confirms the email address is "live" to spammers.
- If you receive an official looking message from your bank or eBay or another site that is genuinely not sure this is what you do. Instead of clicking the link in the electronic register at the site normally through your browser. If there is a genuine serious problem that should receive a message at login. Alternatively contact the customer service of the site by phone if possible.
- Consider using an independent software filtering spam.
