Was this the MTV Video Music Awards or the Oscars? Instead of the pasties, his-and-hers denim-on-denim ensembles and meat dresses of years past, stars hit the “white carpet” at Madison Square Garden Sunday evening in demure pantsuits, somber black and classy ball gowns. Even Amber Rose — ever the provocateur — turned up in black, wide-leg trousers and a loose-fitting blazer (albeit with a black lace bra peeking underneath).

Lady trousers were among the biggest trends of the evening, with model Joan Smalls (in ’90s-inflected black-and-tan), R&B star Tinashe (in a red silk two-piece by Juan Carlos Obando) and model Stella Maxwell (in an insane embroidered ensemble by Jeremy Scott) all wearing pants. But the snazziest suit came from Brooklyn-based rapper Desiigner, who arrived in a trim salmon-hued jacket and pants, shiny two-tone shoes, a ton of gold chains and no shirt. It helped that the “Panda” rapper has a winning personality, with his giddy white-carpet posing coming off as genuine rather than posed. Ditto the always-dapper 2 Chainz, who accessorized his woven African textiles with a Gucci head scarf, and Jaden Smith, who wore a deconstructed coat featuring a cat print.
Black and see-through were other large trends. Kim Kardashian showed off her post-baby figure in a sheer Balmain frock, paired minimally with wet beach hair, while Rita Ora went the opposite direction, teaming her black lace Marc Jacobs negligee with a sweeping red feather hem, fur-accented leather motorcycle jacket and spiky updo that looked forced. Britney Spears’ black dress by Julien MacDonald managed to err on the side of classy, despite its slashes, but Nicki Minaj won sexiest look of the night, in a royal blue Bao Tranchi gown with sheer panels and cut-outs.
In a class by herself, however, was Beyonce, who arrived — squad in tow — in a glittering seafoam column designed by Francesco Scognamiglio that sprouted angel wings out the back. The singer brought an array of fabulous women with her, including Blue Ivy (in a sparkly tutu by children’s designer Mischka Aoki that reportedly cost almost $11,000), proteges Chloe and Halley Bailey in funky Rodarte and ornate nose rings, and the mothers of gun violence victims. It was a powerful, beautiful statement.
