WikiHouse is a revolutionary new technology that may change the way homes are built forever. Branding itself as "an open source construction set," WikiHouse allows anyone and everyone who has access to a computer and the internet the opportunity to become an architect. The premise is simple: architects and designers have put together floor plans and building layouts that users may choose from as they pick and choose what sort of home they would like. Once their home was designed, users would be able to "print" their home's components using computer-controlled tools known as CNC machines.

Build a house in a day

Once a home was "printed," users would simply follow the provided instructions to assemble their jigsaw puzzle of a house. Alastair Parvin, a British architect who has contributed designs to the WikiHouse site, says, "Two or three people working together can build a small house in about a day." A WikiHouse does not, however, include plumbing or electricity. That would have to be installed separately.

WikiHouse could make a difference in Brazil

One avenue where Parvin predicts WikiHouse will be especially helpful is areas where low-income housing is made up of poorly constructed slums, such as the favelas of Brazil. "Slums are being built anyway," said Parvin. "If people are going to build things themselves, wouldn't it be cool if what they make is not rubbish?" A CNC machine capable of making furniture is already established in Brazil, but WikiHouse is hoping that, in time, it will become a valuable resource for those who can't afford normal housing.
