The chance to play for his college coach on the Olympic stage was enough for Kyrie Irving to sit out the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Cavaliers rookie point guard - and leading candidate to take home the NBA Rookie of the year honours - said he would not play for the Australian mens basketball team at the Olympics this summer. Instead, he has targeted Rio 2016 and a chance to play for USA Basketball as his preferred international destination. The decision was made easy for Irving when USA Basketball mens head coach Mike Krzyzewski confirmed to him that he would stay with the national program through the London Olympics and at least until Rio hosts the Olympic Games in four years time. Irving played for the legendary Coach K at Duke University for one season, before opting out to the NBA, where he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. "It was the right decision," Irving told the Washington Post. "I found out Coach K would be coaching in 2016. It made my decision so much easier to play for my coach again. That was the deciding factor." Irving had the option of suiting up for Australia, where he was born in 1992, while his father played professional basketball in Melbourne. With dual U.S. and Australian citizenship, he was eligible to play for either country. Irving said he considers Krzyzewski a major advantage for the Americans, whom he led to Olympic gold in Beijing 2008. "Absolutely. Having one of the greatest coaches of all-time, and everybody talks about all-time, of all coaches. Hes done it, hes been successful with all his players," he said. "Just the way he prepares everybody ... preparation and leadership. Those are the two biggest things - and trust. Once you put your trust in Coach K, Coach K puts his trust in you and thats why it works. You just have to follow his lead. "And you have no choice but to follow a leader like that. He demands your attention and I think he deserves it, from everyone." Irving is averaging 18.6 points and 5.1 assists for the Cavaliers this season.
