Yeti's the most recognized brand, but cheaper knockoffs aren't hard to find. With prices ranging from $10 to $40, however, do the top-shelf competitors merit the extra expense? To find out, we put three to the test.

Using “kitchen-grade” 18/8 stainless steel, the 30 oz yeti rambler are not lined with plastic or other substances that could leach into your beverage. As with all bottles of this style, they have a vacuum between the two walls of the vessel, which stops heat transfer, keeping the internal contents hot or cold for a long time.

I compared the 20 oz yeti rambler to two insulated, stainless steel cups: the 20-ounce Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide Mouth and the 16-ounce Zojirushi SM-SA48-BA Stainless Steel Mug. Highly rated on Amazon and often considered best in class, each costs about $28—pricey, but still $12 less than the Tumbler. Although the three cups have different volumes and primary uses (Zojirushi’s a travel mug, Klean Kanteen’s a water bottle), given the odd, liminal space that a lidded sports tumbler holds, these two still seemed like the best vessels to put the Yeti up against.

First things first: If you thought the stainless steel is just for show, you’re wrong. It retains the temperature of a liquid much longer than glass or plastic, and it’s BPA free (as are the plastics used in the lids of all three mugs here). Also, the temperature of the beverage is illegible from the outside: the 20 oz yeti rambler tumbler and its ilk are never hot or frigid to the touch, and if you pour a cold one in on a hot day it’s not going to “sweat” with condensation on the exterior. The downside here is that you have basically no idea what you’re bringing to your lips until it’s already frozen your teeth, or worse, burnt your tongue.
