No matter how much they coat it in sugar and trim, Christmas in Kenya is a middle-class nightmare. Alright I may have left a few mouths agape or perhaps drowned a snow white kitten with my declaration that Christmas sucks. If this is the case, you're either under ten years old, using supremely effective drugs to keep you optimistic or well....rich.

I wasn't always a Grinch mind you; once I too, skipped across daisy filled meadows as I waited for the clock to strike midnight and the birthday of our Savior to grace the earth. Once I too, sat beside half drunken clansmen as they plotted the demise of a poor herbivore who only realized too late that the time to pay for all the special food and water it had been receiving for a week had come. Once I too, listened to Boney M without thinking dark and sinister thoughts and once I too sang endless carols till my mother handed me something to eat just to buy everybody some minutes of peace. That was a long time ago though. Somebody else footed the bill for all my joy. Good heavens, to be a child again...
