Many people are on a merry-go-round of using sugars and stimulants to give themselves energy which results in stress and creates sleeplessness. The more tired you become the worse your quality of sleep becomes. Stress affects the adrenal glands and cortisol levels build up. When cortisol gets too high, people don't get into the deep delta state of sleep which is the most rejuvenating. They wake up tired. To combat tiredness many people crave coffee and sugar which are stimulants. These arouse the adrenal glands and produce more cortisol.
Caffeine and sugar supply energy through stimulation not through nutrition. That's the problem. They stimulate the adrenal glands which result in quick immediate energy but it doesn't last. The energy is not sustainable but the stress hormones produced increase levels of anxiety muscular tension and pain.
We can break that cycle by nourishing ourselves and nourishing our adrenals. That will help bring down cortisol levels. We will wake up feeling fresh and ready to go. The cravings, a result of tiredness not hunger, will stop. We need to get off of the stimulant merry-go-round and de-stress to recalibrate the body. How do we do that? Nourishing whole foods are those that offer stainable energy not quick bouts of stimulation.
