Keep yourself healthy with this flu epidemic running rampant and it is quite simple, keep your immune system operating at its peak and you can ward off the flu.
To build a strong immune system: Don't eat too much sugar, get plenty of rest, be sure you don't have a vitamin D deficiency, eat plenty of fruits and vegetable particularly garlic, onions, oregano, ginger and leafy green vegetables.
Getting the flu may actually be a symptom of an underlying vitamin D deficiency. The best source for vitamin D is direct sun exposure.
Another way to boost your immune system is to eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
Garlic: have immune-boosting properties that come from its sulfur-containing compounds.
Onions: leeks, shallots and scallions contain health-promoting flavonoid antioxidants which have anti-inflammatory effects that fight infection and bacteria, their benefits include reducing the risk of colon, stomach and prostate cancer and lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.
Oregano: in terms of herbs, is the highest in antioxidant compounds. The antioxidant activity in oregano is due to its high content of phenolic acids and flavonoids, color compounds that are also anti-inflammatory. When eaten, oregano can protect against the common cold, influenza, fevers and indigestion.
Ginger: has been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting.
Leafy greens: nutritionally, greens are very high in vitamins and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc and vitamins A, C, E and K. They are also jam packed with fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micronutrients and phytochemicals.
