AdSense Fraud
« on: »
It is worth examining the definition of Google AdSense Google and click fraud, before delving into "AdSense Fraud".

Google AdSense fraud is one of the diseases affecting the Ad Words advertisers. The program allows AdSense publishers essentially Website / owners to sign up with Google, enabling them to display Google ads on their sites. These publishers essentially act as "Google partners." The ads chosen by the Google bot for display are contextual and the ads are related to the content of the publisher's website, more specifically that particular web page. Google's intention is to leverage the traffic to these specialized sites (in practice) and provide highly direct targeted traffic to the advertiser. A subset of the users of the website Google Partner, click on the ads on Google and costs the advertiser per click. Google shares the booty with the website publisher but the relationship of participation in income corresponds to "undisclosed" Google's criteria. While the exact amount can be reverse engineered, the take home lesson is that the final amount is proportional to income from Google that click.

In theory it's a match made in heaven. The advertiser gets good ROI through targeted traffic, the publisher gets to monetize traffic to your website and the web browser gets to buy that classic CD that I could not live without it. Not to mention that Google gets a wad of cash. The gods smile beneficially profit at all.

Unfortunately, this happy façade hides blemishes. Bass. For all Google AdSense Publishers are not equal. While (we daresay) many advertisers have a real web site, providing a valuable or interesting service to the community around the world, there are a significant number of unscrupulous operators who are there to harass advertisers. These creatures of the night (and we'll explain later why we use that term) that web sites with the express purpose of milking AdSense revenue.

This category of fraudsters deserves a taxonomy of its own, we've developed (the other categories, click fraud and impression fraud are even greater problems in some industries.) For the sake of having no gender bias, which have alternated between genders. We hope our cheerful tone does not mask the revulsion we feel towards these cheats.

Fraudster regressive (ClickMonkey alias):

This guy is in the bottom of the food chain. Inspired by the riches of his neighbor Ms. Jones, who has been doing more than ten thousand dollars a month in AdSense revenue, he plans a course of action. That "invest" in a clickbot software (a simple Google search reveals many) and gets a list of anonymous proxy addresses. It then goes to register a few and hire someone outside of Elance to create a "network of sites" and "click bot". It is expected that the interlinked sites will provide each some link popularity and increase your page rank. If it were that simple! It then proceeds to use the dollar clickbot 30 to start clicking on the sites. Or you can click it manually using the proxies. We do not call him click monkey for nothing. You click and click all the way to see his account getting banned. No banana for this monkey! Their cries of despair from Google fall on deaf ears. This person is likely to come out, but sometimes retries to reach the food chain, the Wanna-Be-crook.

Want to Be-Fraudster (also known as Bozo)

This seeking women for high paying keywords like "mortgage loan capital (current ad words rate: $ 45) or" web hosting "(ad words costing $ 20.) She correctly guesses that the AdSense payment is proportional to what Google earns and therefore homes in on those words. Their strategy is to make a page with content that is appropriate for the keyword high payout target. She moves ahead by clicking the link multiple times and recruits friends and family to give them a click. Or ten!

Little does she know that Google has within 45 days of inspection before obtaining his nubby little fingers on that cash. With little or no knowledge of the rate of clicks, your greed couples with her ignorance. Seeing her ill-gotten paper wealth multiplying in her AdSense interface, which increases the clicks. Google however inspects the CTR and throws a fit when they see a CTR exceeding 20%. Moreover, clicking on Google ads mostly from a few IP addresses and that essentially seals her fate (or rather the docks her earnings). That virtual cash is now just some deleted bytes on a hard drive on Google servers. She complains, is more than rail against the cruelty of Google's policy. Some of these people wisely cease and desist such activities, perhaps philosophizing about the NFL (no free lunch) theorem. However, others see it as ground school for the next stage of nefarious behavior. The Almost-No scammer.

Almost-There Fraudster (aka Smartalec)

The archetype of the ATF is supremely confident in his ability to fool Google. Like Bozo, find high paying keywords and makes appropriate website (s). Suppose that in a third world country, only the most interesting case. The case described here is a news year. He has read this article and learned the lesson taken later. He knows that you click on the IP addresses of the U.S., UK and Canada are worth much more than the clicks from the IP addresses of the third world countries. Therefore, seeking friendship with people from such IP addresses, access to messaging services.

In this way, click on the unique intellectual property unrelated and (one hopes) that Google is fooled. Remember "creature of the night." Well, these people tend to be more than a little time zone removed from the U.S. or Canada, for what they are up at odd hours whenever they feel that their goals are more likely to be active. In addition to sometimes have to deal with "problems" as a day of work.

click fraud think you got troll on these sites is a job well done. He has clicks from the IP address of your choice .. An interesting factoid is that in AdSense, the state also is important. Clicks from Washington and New York have the highest payment for AdSense fraud.

He just has a problem. His tragic flaw. While working so hard to obtain unique IP and high-income, which is not able to maintain a good CTR. Is likely to cross the limit of 30-40% of daily CTR and 10-20% of CTR in general. Ends up in purgatory same as Bozo. The account is banned, and put the email abhorred. Yes, the "AdSense account closure." Almost-There is never enough in this nether world of AdSense games. Although he may have done a few thousand dollars before the punishment amounts to the crime. Crime does not pay well, now does it? Well, gentle reader, unfortunately crime _is_ paying to the next category. Fraudster Maestro (aka Satan's Spawn).

Fraudster Maestro (aka Satan's Spawn):

This category of fraudsters is the most sophisticated and rarely gets caught by google. She has researched high-paying keywords and CTR issues as well. She has a soft line in the business of applying clicks. She can flirt online, and ask you to click on the "link" to your image. Or she may request that clicking the link makes that feeds hungry children in Ethiopia. Let's follow a typical session of "simple" chat:

U.S. Username: hello

FM Fraud: what are your coordinates, handsome?

Username USA: New York, NY

FM Fraud: Oh! I wish I could be there. Can you help a damsel in distress?

U.S. User: sure

AT Fraud: I have a site and want to see if all the links on this page are working or not. Can you please click on the links and see if another page is loaded?

U.S. User: Of course. Link?

FM Fraud: www.fraudstersite.com / high value-keyword-page.html

U.S. Username: wait! Yes I checked all links are working fine.

FM Fraud:
Thanks

U.S. User: so we can talk about you now? (Message Not Delivered as the fraudster has blocked the user is busy looking for a new victim)

And she has plenty of tricks up her repertoire besides chatting to strangers. She knows about opt-in lists, usenet and blogs where they can catch the victims. Expertise and is able to empathize with their victims do not let arrogance on their way to success. Since she is very aware of the problems CTR has a secret weapon. Your site is optimized for certain keywords that pay little, they are not really competitive. She organically gets lots of traffic (but for things unrelated to the highly competitive keywords for a fee). On its website, which may be giving greeting cards or free screensavers. The end result is an excellent impression count. The second step for her is that it makes no related pages on the same site and these pages refer to well-paying keywords. These keywords are used to lure victims in chat sessions. The process of getting the clicks is different but the results due to CTR are very lucrative.

So how does all this geek talk affect the PPC advertiser? It is a market of $ 5 billion + (for accurate projections about the future, please check out our FAQs, and a 20% + rate of fraud, we are talking about a 1 BILLION scam per year. Even Dr. Evil may be impressed by a number. is greater than the combined GDP of a few banana republics. And a fair chunk is ending up in the coffers of these fraudsters. We know from anecdotal evidence, how many people are cleaning up to 20 thousand dollars a month. Everything, thanks to the hapless PPC advertiser.
We want to emphasize that there are plenty of authentic sites serving genuine content. Unfortunately the existence of these people (as mentioned above) reduces the ROI of many advertisers to the extent to rethink their interest in PPC. In the words of one of our organic SEO clients, with PPC "always get a bit less than they put back on." It need not be that way, if you look closely at your traffic announcement comes from the words and take some measures (such as traffic analysis or at least one log file analysis) to protect arm yourself. Look for patterns, some of which are obvious (such as large traffic spikes from India). Unfortunately other patterns may require a doctorate in artificial intelligence. But the keyword is to stay nimble. Convince search engines to return the money is much more difficult and a lot more work to do in a proactive manner so that visitors problem and take measures they deem appropriate. Before the situation gets out of hand. Remember that an ounce of prevention ...

We want to emphasize that there are plenty of authentic sites serving genuine content. Unfortunately the existence of these people (as mentioned above) reduces the ROI of many advertisers to the extent to rethink their interest in PPC. In the words of one of our organic SEO clients, with PPC "always get a bit less than they put back on." It need not be that way, holding fast. Convince search engines to return the money is much more difficult and a lot more work to do in a proactive manner so that visitors problem and take measures they deem appropriate.

Some things you can do to stay ahead of the game. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it's a start. It is sorted by the level of protection in ascending order may be needed.

1> Let your visitors know you watch them and know a bit about them. For example, if you visit www.sofizar.com, you'll see information about yourself. You can display this information to all its visitors, or only some of them. It may be in-your-face or subtle, but remember at least some of the fraudsters who are being observed. Sofizar provides sample code and free your database that allows you to display premium information (like city, ISP, the ISP number of contacts.)

2> Investing in a monitoring program for serious users. Set alarms based on the number of times a person clicks on your site in a given period of time (hourly, weekly, monthly). Show the same information to someone who is undoubtedly PPCing your budget to death, as a custom message box. Something hard, if the pattern continues. "We're seeing the use, and we are noticing that keep clicking on our website through PPC. If you do not stop, we would have to call your local ISP +91-23-344-5678 (if you see the information that we may collect from visitors, you know you can get even more specific.) This weed is some occasional fraudsters.

3> Enter the verification of the things we discussed above, by investing in a data collection package of industrial strength. Based on their data collection, a strategy is a score to each visitor, deduct (or attach point) based on the following (not exhaustive).

a. Visitors conversion / conversion history past.

b. Visit in-depth analysis.

c. Visit time analysis (time spent on each page, and the time of day the visit occurs).

d. Cookies / Javascript / "unknown operating system"

e. Keyword analysis costs.

f. Anonymous Proxy Server

g. It is part of the "list fraudster."

h. Country / location analysis (which really are for people in Sao Paolo, Brazil for its French restaurant in New York?).

4> No pattern matching. See what your 20% of their clients do as part of a "macro pattern" and the game against visiting this pattern.

Note that you will get some "false positives" and vice versa. A few innocent people may get unfairly labeled as "crooks", while a few "crooks" and can give you the slip. It is not an exact science, but over a period of time that can come pretty close. If you decide to take your case, with Google, you have to make a convincing case. Everything is based on detailed data, instead of (what may be regarded by them as) the paranoia.

In the long run, as the threat evolves and the fraudsters better, you have to keep your strategy to adapt to your friends, diligent data collection statistics and pattern matching.
