What's the point of having a nicely designed website with great content and graphic layout when no one can visit because it is not readily visible in search engines? Designing and uploading a website with great content and graphic layout is cool but that cannot fetch you traffic or money if basic search engine optimization principles are not applied.

The idea of having a website in the first place is to share your information, ideas, products and/or services with the world on the world wide web. Search engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the ways of making your website visible to the world. SEO has grown in complexity over the years but a web savvy individual can easily optimize his/her website using these basic tips for beginners

Know and stick to a niche or topic with respect to your website (It is important to keep your website within a category or niche of content presentation).

Research on and identify keywords/keyphrases related and relevant to the niche of your website's content (this include words or phrases that you feel are most popular in searching for websites related to your website's content or presentation.

Optimize your webpages using these keywords while presenting your contents as sparsely as possible in order to avoid being tagged as "spamming" by search engines. (These keywords should be included in your titles, META description, META keywords list and ALT tag when using images.

META tags are codes written in HTML that are included in your webpages; the content of these codes are some o the criteria that search engines compare with your actual contents to determine relevance and categorization of your website.

Extenal links from other quality websites, directed to your website (otherwise known as backlinks) can also improve your website's ranking in SERP (SEARCH ENGINE RESULT PAGE) if the anchor keywords used to represent the link is related or relevant to your website's content and keywords. You can easily get free backlinks by promoting your website using these methods:

-Submit your site URL to search engines
-Submit your site URL to different web directories (choose the right category that best suit your web content)
-Submit quality articles at various article submission websites (like ezineArticle, goArticles etc) and press release distribution sites and include your website's link using keyword-rich anchor tags in your biography section. Your articles are often indexed quickly and appears in SERPs.
-Join forums such as "Africa Top Forum" and find relevant/related threads and boards that match your website's content. Then contribute quality and unique content that will enhance followership... Your signature will often have a link to your website of choice.
-Exchange links with other related quality websites
-Join traffic exchange programs; for example, if blogging on your website, you can join BlogExplosion, BlogSoldiers, BlogXchange, BlogClickers to mention a few... These generate traffic to your blog.
-Joining Blog Directories like DayPop, BlogWise, GetBlogs, Technorati, BlogRama, BlogRing etc can also create traffic exchange opportunities.

Masking your links using relevant keywords in your META keywordS list where possible is also a good way of improving your visibilty in search engines.

A basic META TAG Code for your website can be created using free MET TAG GENERATORs which can be found on the web. Copy and Paste the generated "meta tags" in between the < head > and < /head > tags of the html source code of your website's pages

Sample:

<HTML>
< HEAD >
< TITLE >The title of your Web page goes here< /TITLE >
< META NAME="description" content="The description of your Web page goes here" >
< META NAME="keywords" content="Keywords and key phrases go here" >
< /HEAD >
< BODY >
The content of your Web page that visitors see goes here.
< /BODY >
< /HTML >

If we were to be creating a website with search engine optimization as our niche, the META TAG code will look like this:

< HTML >
< HEAD >
< TITLE >improve your search engine ranking with search engine optimization< /TITLE >

< META NAME="description" content="affordable, quality search engine optimization services to improve your search engine rankings" >
< META NAME="keywords" content="search engine positioning, ranking, placement, optimization services, submission, registration, placement, positioning, online marketing, web design, web site design, HTML coding, graphic design" >
< /HEAD >
< BODY >
The content of the Web page that visitors see goes here.
< /BODY >
< /HTML >

By simply editing these tags and inserting them in your html source code as explained above, then following the steps above and focusing on your keyword placements/use throughout your websites content, you can greatly enhance your website's visibility in search engine result pages over time.

In conclusion, optimizing your website's pages basically involves:

-Finding your Niche (Category of specialization)
-Research your Keywords in relation to your Niche
-Produce fresh, quality, unique and updated content carefully optimized with your keyword and meta tag codes.
-Promote your website's URL through multiple platformS using relevant keyword anchor text (some listed above).
