Search engines fuctionality can be likened to the index of a book; it indexes the content of every webpage it can find on the internet. The concept or challenge of search engine optimization for your webpages therefore involves making your webpage/site visible to search engines so as to be listed in the search engines' index.

Search engines send out programs called "robots" or "spiders" to gather all the information on websites that they can find on the internet based on a set of algorithm which include your page optimization for relevant keywords searched for.

This information is then "cached" or stored in the search engines' servers where they are compared and categorized with other stored information from other related websites.

When a search is made on a search engines' portal using keywords or keyphrases, the keywords/phrases used is compared with the stored information indexed in the search engines' servers and the search engine then list the resultant report on its SERP (search engine result page) based on its percieved order of importance.

The placement of your website/webpage in the order of importance is determined by some basic factors which includes:

• Regular content Updates (Freshness, uniqueness, relevance and quality of your contents)
• Quantity and quality of related backlinks
• Clear search engine optimization using keywords/phrases in direction and relevancy through anchor text, titles, headers, contents etc.

These are some of the bedrock of the search engine algorithm on which the search engines are based. A careful understanding of these basic tips can greatly enhance the chances of your website/webpages being detected by search engines... Which eventually translates to traffic to your website(s).

Well explained. Now I can clearly understand how search engine work. I prefer Google than other s because of its fast and popularity.

My dear, it is about working of search engines. but i would like to tell that all th search engines including yahoo, google and bing place the website position in search results on different parameters.

On the above, apart from "Quantity and quality of related backlinks" that is  google gives attention to,  other search engines basically incorporate the other methods in ranking websites.
