Branding is a Legitimate Internet Marketing Strategy, just that branding just like offline method bothers on large budget of the company or the entrepreneur, because branding isn't cheap. But when is done right it goes a long way building the organization's business and future. 

I would put stress over branding also besides putting balance efforts in to SEO. It is the brand popularity that encourages to buy. Social media is the most popular and convenient way to popularize your brand. Rank may deliver traffic but it is not responsible for the sale.

Marketing; Internet marketing is more focused upon generating
leads while branding needs activities to make the brand
popular and eye catching; so, it consumes more efforts that
may not deliver leads.   

As a professional the title is confusing things here. Branding is one of elements of promotion and promotion is part of marketing mix. That is to say branding is too tiny to be used/call/regarded as marketing strategies. Branding is one of marketing communications tools just like advertising, packaging, publicity, personal selling etc
