A bum is a loafer, someone who keeps lazing around and expects someone else is to look after him or her.
Many of our parents have this mindset but we should not fall into it as well. There is nothing wrong with expecting to reap the fruit of your labors. Yet, having unrealistic notions of your kids providing for you while you lounge is a bit too much. Expect them to chip in but at least still have a safety net in case things go south for them and then you wouldn't be caught high and dry as well. Make plans not to be over-dependent the way some of our parents do.

Quite a number of us would agree with what I am saying. Imagine an old man retiring and then suddenly springing it on his children that he is coming to live with one of them with his wife. Don't get me wrong, please. I am not saying parents don't deserve to be welcomed into their children's home  anytime but assuming that your kids are buoyant enough to support you is rather unfair, especially when you are not ill so can still get by on your own to a certain degree.

This assumption is even more acceptable to our parents but not you who is more exposed, educated and enlightened. How do you go to bed comfortably with just your kids as your retirement plan? You are being a bum. The proper order is that parents leave an inheritance to their children. Save up for your kids rather than patting yourself on the back for managing to raise them to adulthood. You only did your job as a parent so stop expecting to get paid for it.
Children are investments, yes but not retirement plans.
