Nigeria's foremost rural surgeon, and National Secretary, Association of Rural Surgical Practitioners of Nigeria. Dr Oluyombo Adetilewa Awojobi, is dead at 64. Dr Awojobi Oluyombo obtained his medical degree from the University College Hospital, Ibadan, in 1975 where he earned the Adeola Odutola prize for the best final-year medical student. In 1986, Awojobi set up a private practice, Awojobi Clinic Eruwa in Eruwa town.

Other awards he has received include the Oyo State Merit Award for rural medical practice, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure Prize and the College of Medicine Award from the University of Ibadan for his contribution to the Ibarapa Community Health Project. Awojobi's hospital which has earned a national reputation for reliable and competent care, uses devices that he can build and maintain himself, keeping costs down. The surgical table, autoclaves, blood centrifuge, suction pressure and boiler were all made from local materials.
