– A 60-year-old man in Delta state, Okporo Arigo, has hung himself on a tree, leaving a note stating reasons for his action

– Arigo, whose younger brother is a serving councillor at the Ughelli north legislative arm, was discovered in the bush with the suicide note nearby his dangling lifeless body

A 60-year-old man in Ughelli north local government area of Delta state has committed suicide, citing his inability to feed and provide for his immediate family as reasons for his action.

The victim, Okporo Arigo, was said to have hung himself on a tree and left a note stating why he took the drastic measure, The Nation reports.

Arigo, whose younger brother is a serving councillor at the Ughelli north legislative arm, was discovered in the bush with the suicide note nearby his dangling lifeless body.

A member of the Uwheru community executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity on the issue said the suicide left by victim claimed his inability to feed and provide for his immediate family made him end his life.

"He claimed to have embarked on the act to put a stop on his inability to take care of his immediate family after his younger brother, who is a serving councillor, abandoned him to his fate," the source said.

The source claimed that the late Arigo's younger brother had not been paid in the last 10 months by the state government.

The source added: "I don't think the man would have died if the state government had been paying the councillors their salaries. I believe the payment was part of what that led to the death of the councillor's brother."

Since Nigeria slid into economic recession, the cases of suicide has been skyrocketing due to the spate of hardship in the country.

In September, Vanguard reported that a 50-year-old man, identified as Chief Ekanem Edet, in in Itu local government area of Akwa Ibom state hung himself, leaving a suicide note in which he blamed his action on harsh economic condition.

According to a recent report by the Nigerian Police Force, about 62 Nigerians have committed suicide due to the depression associated with economic depression since the official announcement was made in August. The motivation behind the suicide saga is still been investigated by the authorities.
