The Confederation of
African Football has
suspended blundering
referee Slim Jdidi over his
controversial handling of
the African Nations Cup semi-final match between
Burkina Faso and Ghana.
However, CAF will still be guided
by the Tunisian official’s report
in determining whether Jonathan
Pitroipa’s red card can be
rescinded. The CAF executive committee will
meet on Friday to review what
has happened in the
tournament, with Pitroipa’s
controversial sending-off to be
tabled. CAF secretary general Hicham El
Amrani, addressing a press
conference this afternoon, said
the continental mother body will
be guided by the report from
the referee. "There is a meeting tomorrow
(Friday) but you have to
understand that the referee’s
report is final and so if he
doesn’t make mention of having
made a mistake, it stays that way," says Amrani. "The other referee Bennett
(Daniel) mentioned in his report
that he made a mistake in
issuing out a yellow card to the
wrong player, which is why the
yellow card was rescinded in that instance." Burkina Faso have already
lodged an appeal over the
suspension of the Stade Rennais
midfielder, who was sent off for
diving after a second yellow card
by Jdidi, yet television replays clearly showed that he was
fouled. The 2013 edition of the Nations
Cup has had some questionable
officiating, with Egyptian referee
Grisha Ghead having been the
first to make dubious decisions in
the group match between Nigeria and Zambia.
