Bryce Dejean-Jones scored 18 points while Jameel McKay gave 14 off the bench for the Cyclones (15-4, 5-2 Big 12), who were coming off a loss to Texas Tech on Saturday. Javan Felix had 20 points and eight assists, while Jonathan Holmes added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Longhorns (14-6, 3-4), who have lost their past two games. Isaiah Taylor finished with 17 points with eight assists. After Iowa State built an 11-point halftime lead, Niang hit a 3-pointer to start the scoring in the second half, and a pair of free throws from Dustin Hogue gave Iowa State a 41-25 advantage. After Kendal Yancy put in a layup for Texas to make it a 62-48 game with just over nine minutes to play, the Cyclones scored the next seven points to open up a larger lead. Niang?s 3-ball made it a 69-48 game with eight minutes left. Texas didnt roll over and play dead, though, as the Longhorns slowly chipped at the deficit and put together a 10-2 run to pull within 79-73 when Yancy gave a layup with just over two minutes to go. The Cyclones Monte Morris countered with a pair of free throws and McKay made 1-of-2 for Iowa State after Demarcus Holland missed a jumper at the other end. Holmes then made a 3-ball with 1 1/2 minutes to play, but Dejean-Jones answered with two from the line for an 84-76 lead. Texas kept fouling and was able to make it a three-point game after Holmes put in another trey to cut the lead to 87-84, and Niang only connected on one of his two foul shots at the other end. Holmes, missed a jumper, though, and McKay?s free throw at the other end with just a few seconds remaining sealed the win for Iowa State. A pair of jumpers from Niang helped Iowa State jump out to a 10-2 lead three minutes in, but six straight points from Myles Turner helped Texas tie the game at 14-14 with eight minutes elapsed. The Cyclones went back on top and were holding a six-point lead when Niang hit a 3-ball to extend the margin to 30-21 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the half. Yates made a strong case to be Matt Ryans backup Thursday night, throwing for 243 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-14 win over the Jaguars. Yates had shown little in the teams first three exhibitions, completing 39.4 per cent of his passes, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Second-year player Sean Renfree posted better numbers and seemingly had an edge in the competition. But Yates shined against the Jaguars. "Things worked well tonight," said Yates, who spent his first three seasons in Houston. "Its taken me a little time to get use to this offence coming in so late. I was playing catch-up there in camp and preseason, and I was getting pretty frustrated with the way I was playing in some of the games.
