DUISBURG, Germany -- Birgit Fischers personal doctor has stopped the 50-year-old eight-time Olympic champions latest comeback attempt only one day before the German canoe and kayak Olympic trials. The German federation says a routine check produced medical results that need to be further examined and that Fischer cannot be allowed to compete. "I am disappointed, I feel fitter than in my most recent comeback in 2003," Germanys most decorated Olympian said Thursday. No details of Fischers medical condition were released, but the German teams doctor also said she could not compete without risks to her health. Fischer, who also has 27 world championship golds, won her first Olympic title in Moscow in 1980, competing for East Germany. She did not compete four years later in Los Angeles because of a boycott by Communist nations but returned in 1988 in Seoul to win another gold. Fischer won at least one gold medal at each subsequent Olympics, now competing for a reunited Germany, until her last games in Athens in 2004. She is considered as arguably the best kayaker in Olympic history. Fischer could theoretically still qualify for the London Games at the German nationals at the end of April but her chances appear slim. Fischer has been training at a lake in East Germany, where she lives and runs a canoeing school.
