The red-hot Toronto Blue Jays take aim at their seventh straight win on Monday when they open a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays at Rogers Centre. Toronto has moved two games up on the New York Yankees in the American League East and is atop the division this late into a season for the first time since July 6, 2000. The Jays enter this matchup on the heels of an impressive three-game sweep of the AL West-leading Oakland Athletics. On Sunday, J.A. Happ tossed seven shutout innings, Jose Bautista knocked in two runs and Toronto rolled, 3-1. Happ (4-1) scattered four hits, walked three and struck out seven, and Edwin Encarnacion homered in the Blue Jays ninth win in 10 tries. "Were playing together as a team, pitching good," Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes said. "Good defense behind the guys, timely hitting, winning teams do that kind of stuff." The Blue Jays lead the majors with 70 home runs and have homered in eight straight contests. They havent homered in nine consecutive contests since April 27-May 5, 2012. One player who wouldnt mind a few longballs on Monday is righty Drew Hutchison, wholl be shooting for his third straight win. Hutchison followed up his first-ever shutout by beating the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday to improve to 3-3 with a 3.45 ERA. Hutchison has split two starts versus the Rays, pitching to a 5.79 ERA in those meetings. Tampa, meanwhile, will counter with veteran lefty Erik Bedard, who is 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA. Bedard has filled in nicely for the Rays in the wake of injuries to Matt Moore and Jeremy Hellickson and is 2-1 with a 0.96 ERA over his last five starts. Bedard, though, absorbed the loss to Oakland on Wednesday, as he surrendered three runs (1 earned) and just one hit - a home run - over 5 1/3 innings. He also walked three batters. Tampa comes into Mondays opener playing its best baseball of the season as well. The Rays swept the Boston Red Sox over the weekend and have won four in a row. Tampa completed the sweep on Sunday, as Sean Rodriguezs three-run, pinch-hit homer helped power a five-run seventh inning, and Tampa Bay sent the Red Sox to their 10th consecutive loss with an 8-5 decision. Evan Longoria went 3-for-5 with a homer and a pair of runs scored, and Yunel Escobar drove in two while setting off a benches-clearing incident late in the contest. The contentious victory was also Joe Maddons 700th as Rays manager. Joel Peralta (2-3), who blew a two-run lead in the seventh but was rescued by the Tampa offense, was credited with the win. Leading by five in the seventh, Escobar stole third and the Red Sox bench started jawing at him from the dugout. He talked back and started walking toward their bench, before Johnny Gomes ran in from left field and both benches cleared. Gomes, Escobar and Rodriguez were all ejected after the incident. "What was the score, 8-3? It was a five-run lead in the seventh inning. So thats not even nearly as egregious as last year in the playoffs," Maddon said of the incident. Germany needs one more win to advance to the semifinal to face Australia or Russia in April.DENVER - The Colorado Rockies dont expect Esmil Rogers to replace Ubaldo Jimenez. So far, though, he has been a solid fill-in. Troy Tulowitzki homered among his three hits, Rogers pitched effectively into the sixth inning and the Rockies beat the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Thursday night. Ty Wigginton and Chris Nelson had two hits each for the Rockies, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Rogers took Jimenezs spot in the rotation when the ace was traded to Cleveland on Saturday. His new role started when Jimenez left that game against San Diego after giving up four runs in the first inning. Rogers threw five innings of one-run ball in a game Colorado came back to win 8-5. "Its sad that he left but it opened up an opportunity for me," Rogers said. Things didnt start well Thursday but he settled down to keep the Rockies in the game against Washington. He allowed one run and seven hits, walked two and struck out six in 5 2-3 innings. He gave up a run in the first and had multiple baserunners in the third, fifth and sixth. He left after pinch-hitter Alex Coras single with two outs in the sixth put runners on the corners. Matt Reynolds struck out Rick Ankiel to end the inning. "He started slow but when you looked up in the fifth inning and see he threw 74 strikes, when youre pitching that aggressively, youre going to get people out," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. The Nationals felt they missed their chances to get to Rogers early. "I felt like we left him off the hook numerous times," Washington manager Davey Johnson said. "Hes got a good arm but he made a lot of bad pitches and we just didnt capitalize." Rogers (5-1) threw 29 pitches in the first inning but he was able to go deep enough into the game to give the Rockies tired bullpen a breather. "He pitched great in San Diego and he tried to build off that, and he did to a point," catcher Chris Iannetta said. "He did a really good job there were just few pitches he probably wishes he had back." He stayed in long enough for the Rockies to take a lead in the fifth. Iannetta led off with a double, moved to third on Rogers sacrifice bunt and scored on Eric Young Jr.s single to centre to make it 2-1. Tulowitzki made it 3-1 when he led off the sixth with his 21st homer of the year off reliever Collin Balestter.dddddddddddd The Rockies broke it open in the eighth when reliever Ryan Mattheus walked Nelson and Young and hit Iannetta with the bases loaded to make it 6-1. Ryan Zimmermans two-run double in the ninth made it 6-3. Zimmerman had three hits and Michael Morse, Wilson Ramos and Ankiel had two hits each for the Nationals. Washington starter Ross Detwiler cruised through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Helton drew a one-out walk, moved to second on Tulowitzkis single -- Colorados first hit of the game -- and scored on a single by Wigginton to tie it 1-1. Detwiler escaped further trouble when right-fielder Jayson Werth threw out Tulowitzki at home when he tried to score on Nelsons single. Detwiler (1-1) gave up two runs and five hits, walked three and struck out one in five innings. It was his second start of the season and his first after five relief appearances. "I started walking people and was leaving the ball up a little bit," Detwiler said. "They were able to get under it and put it in the outfield." The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the first. Ankiel led off with a single, Zimmerman drew a one-out walk and Morse singled to centre.
