Mikel is in the final year of his
current contract at Stamford
Bridge but the Blues are keen
to hold on to the 25-year-old
and are willing to offer him
new terms.
Talks have been ongoing for
some time and Mikel's agent
John Shittu now claims common
ground has been reached.
"Mikel will soon sign a new
five-year contract with an
improved salary and we are
just about finalising the details
of it," Shittu told the Sun.
"Mikel is one of Chelsea's most
consistent performers and the
club agrees with us he
deserves a new and improved
contract. He has a year left
and Chelsea have decided to
add four more years to it."
The Nigeria international
arrived in West London from
Norwegian side Lyn Oslo in
2006 under a cloud of
controversy after Manchester
United had initially claimed to
have signed him.
He has enjoyed mixed success
since then, breaking into the
team under Jose Mourinho but
polarising opinion among
subsequent managers.
After falling out of favour with
Andre Villas-Boas towards the
end of his reign, Mikel was
restored to the role of first-
team regular when Roberto Di
Matteo took charge and
produced arguably his two
finest displays in a Chelsea
shirt in the Champions League
semi-final second leg against
Barcelona, and final triumph
against Bayern Munich.
