No footballer today can evoke rapture as Lionel Messi in full flow and flight. The 29-year-old striker's skill, speed and awareness can turn football into a solo performance art. Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, fellow player Gerard Pique and the club's fan boys are among the many who have canonized Messi as "the greatest of all time". Even the venerated Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has described him as "the best ever".
But to deserve the exalted epithet requires some more checked boxes than Messi has. A footballer must succeed for both club and country on the biggest stage. He should revel in pressure encounters, excel over a decade, and leave a social imprint beyond the game.
So, who is a better fit than Messi for the honour? Dutchman Johann Cryuff revolutionized the modern game bringing the concept of Total Football to life even though the most coveted of trophies, the World Cup, eluded him. Some pundits believe Argentina's Alfredo Di Stefano was the chosen one, some others feel the title lies with Hungary's Ferenc Puskas. They too did not lift the World Cup. Then, of course, there are Pele and Maradona, who controversially shared Fifa's Player of the Century award in 2000.
