Another weekend brings with it another potential twist in the title race. With Premier League champions Manchester City travelling to Goodison Park to take on Everton, another slip-up could be on the cards, meaning that United would finally have something to shout about following a fortnight of near misses. Of course, United have to take care of manager-less Reading at Old Trafford for there to be any celebrations come Saturday evening. A reaction is needed following the loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League as well as the draw with Chelsea in the FA Cup last weekend. A home game against relegation candidates Reading is certainly what the doctor ordered. Not only is it a game which *should* be a relatively easy win, it’s a game where the likes of Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick can have a much needed rest, in preparation for a tough April fixture list. United will be without Nani who injured his hamstring last weekend against Chelsea and Phil
Jones, who is still suffering with an ankle problem that he picked up against Reading in the FA Cup last month. Midfielder Paul Scholes is also still out with a knee injury that has kept him out of action for the past couple of months. Reading have injury problems of their own with goalkeeper Adam Federici and Jimmy Kebe both set
to miss out. Veteran striker Jason Roberts has also joined their injury list with a hip problem that will most likely keep
him out of the rest of the season. Reading’s form is as poor as you would expect from a side in the relegation zone, losing twelve of their last eighteen Premier League games. They have claimed just five points away from the Madejski all season long – the worst record in the top-flight. United’s form is similarly poor by
their standards after failing to win their last two games at Old Trafford. The last time they went three games without a win was in 2011 when they drew with Newcastle and Benfica before losing to Crystal Palace. All games were at Old Trafford. Despite the lacklustre opponents, this is a massive game for Manchester United. Anything but a win would turn a blip into a mini-crisis at the Theatre Of Dreams. Thankfully, a win is the only outcome I can see from today’s late kick-off.
