Netherlands booked their place in the World Cup semifinals after defeating Costa Rica on penalties following a 0-0 draw in Salvador.

Louis van Gaal brought on substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul for the shootout and the decision paid dividends as the Newcastle player saved from Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana to send the Dutch through with a 4-3 advantage in the shootout.

Chances were limited during the first 45 minutes, but Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas continued his excellent World Cup form, notably denying Robin van Persie.
The second half was also lacking in excitement until its final minutes, when Netherlands repeatedly threatened to score a winner.
Wesley Sneijder was the first to go close, striking the post with a free kick, and Van Persie then came within a whisker of connecting with a cross at the far post.
Finally, in injury time, Van Persie saw a shot deflected onto the crossbar.
The match ultimately went to extra time,and Costa Rica might have been awarded a penalty when Ron Vlaar appeared to bring down Marco Urena in the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The final minutes of the game proved frantic, and Sneijder again struck the crossbar in the dying moments, but the tie was settled by penalties and the Oranje set up a meeting with Argentina in the last four.
