Swansea moved to the top of the Premier League table, albeit only for a couple of hours, with a 3-0 win over West Brom on a day that Chelsea will remember and Manchester City will want to forget.
The Swans made a quick start at home to Alan Irvine's side and first-half goals from Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge sent them on their way to a third win in three matches for manager Garry Monk. Routledge's goal was one to savour as well, as he converted a bicycle kick from outside the box to add to Dyer's early opener, and Dyer added gloss to the
scoreline with 19 minutes remaining.
Their stay at the top would last only until the conclusion of the tea-time kick-off which produced fireworks galore and an incredible 6-3 win for Chelsea over Everton at Goodison Park. Big-money recruit Diego Costa scored twice for Jose Mourinho's side, the first after only 35 seconds, and
there were also goals for Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic and Ramires, as well as a Seamus Coleman own goal. Everton threatened comebacks on three occasions, closing to 2-1 (Kevin Mirallas), 3-2 (Steven Naismith) and 4-3 (debut boy Samuel Eto'o) but Ramires and Costa's exquisite second goal put Chelsea on top of the table, although Tottenham could change that again on Sunday.
The biggest shock of the day came at the Etihad Stadium where Stoke City grabbed an unlikely 1-0 win over champions Manchester City. Mark Hughes' men held on for dear life in the closing stages after Mame Biram Diouf scored a sensational
solo goal to put Stoke in front on 58 minutes.
City's local rivals Manchester United remain without a win after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Burnley at Turf Moor in the lunchtime kick-off. United again produced a lacklustre display, despite
British record signing Angel di Maria having a relatively lively debut before coming off with 20 minutes left. Indeed it was Burnley who came closest to scoring
with David Jones, a former United trainee, seeing his free-kick bounce back off the cross bar early in the first-half. If it was goals you wanted in the 3pm kick-offs, St
James' Park was the place to be where Neil Warnock's return to club management ended with a thrilling 3-3 draw for Crystal Palace against Newcastle. Palace made a flying start with Dwight Gayle scoring
inside a minute, but they were pegged back by Daryl Janmaat's first goal since his summer move to Tyneside. Jason Puncheon restored Palace's lead just after the break but two goals from teenager Rolando Aarons appeared to have given Newcastle the points, only for Wilfried Zaha to pounce deep into injury time to
secure a point.
QPR secured their first win back in the top division with a 45th minute goal from Charlie Austin enough to see them past Sunderland 1-0 at Loftus Road.
And Morgan Schneiderlin scored twice for Southampton as they battled past West Ham 3-1 after trailing to an early goal from Mark Noble at Upton Park.
The Spurs transfer target scored on 45 and 68 and summer signing Graziano Pelle sealed a first win for boss Ronald Koeman with seven minutes remaining.
