Manchester United will feel like
they are in control of their
last-16 tie against Real Madrid as
it ended 1-1 at the Bernabeu on
Wednesday night. Danny Welbeck opened the
scoring after David de Gea had
pushed Fabio Coentrao's shot
onto the post, as he escaped the
attentions of Sergio Ramos to
head home the first goal. On Cristiano Ronaldo's first game
against his old side, though, there
was only ever going to be one
Real Madrid player to score the
equaliser. And indeed Ronaldo
leaped highest to glance the ball into the net before half-time. After the break, United were in
uproar as Patrice Evra was felled
by Rafael Varane when through
on goal, but no free-kick was
given, and Robin van Persie went
close twice in quick succession as his shot hammered off the bar,
before Xabi Alonso was able clear
off the line from the Dutch
striker's follow-up. In the night's other game,
Shakhtar Donetsk were held by
German champions Borussia
Dortmund 2-2 in Ukraine. Darijo Srna curled home a
wonderful free-kick just after
the half hour mark to put the
home side ahead, but Robert
Lewandowski found room after a
mis-kick to slot the equaliser. A long ball up the field found
substitute Douglas Costa in the
68th minute and the Brazilian
drilled the ball into the corner of
the net to put the Ukrainians
back in charge, but Mats Hummels popped up with three minutes
left to head home a late
equaliser.
