VICTORIA -- Katerine Savard broke the Canadian record in the womens 100-metre butterfly on Friday at the world championship swimming trials. The 17-year-old Quebec native clocked 57.97 seconds to eclipse the previous national mark of 58.67 set by Montreals Audrey Lacroixin July 2009. It was also the fifth fastest time in the world this year and she beat her personal best by one second. Lacroix took the silver in 59.42 and 15-year-old Noemie Thomas of Vancouver was third in 59.73. "Im really proud with that performance," said Savard. "It shows that Im getting closer to the best in the world but Ill have to swim even faster to get in the final at the world championships." The competition is determining Canadas team for the 2011 FINA World Championships this summer in Shanghai. On Friday, the team list grew to 28 with one day of racing left. In the womens 100 backstroke, Julia Wilkinson of Stratford, Ont., took her third individual gold in 1:00.39, just missing the Canadian record. Sinead Russell of Oakville, Ont., followed in 1:00.76. "I know I have it in me I just have to get it together at the right time," said Wilkinson, who was gunning for the national mark. "I had a great swim in the prelims and if I could have taken that energy for the final I think I could have gone under a minute." In the mens 100 backstroke, Tobias Oriwol of Toronto won in 55.06 while Matt Hawes of Ottawa and Charles Francis of Montreal tied for second at 55.10, under the qualifying standard. A swim-off will be held Saturday between Hawes and Francis to determine who gets the second spot in the event. "I knew it was going to be a really tight race," said Oriwol. "I just had to work on my own strategy and to be honest Im surprised to win. Im glad to be on the team going to China this summer." In the mens 100 butterfly, Joe Bartoch of London, Ont., is also headed to China after winning in 52.95. "I like to get ahead of everybody and let them can catch me," said Bartoch, a 2008 Olympian. "That way Im in control. Its great to be going to China again. I had a great experience the first time." Samantha Cheverton of Pointe-Claire, Que., notched her second individual victory taking the 200 freestyle in 1:58.80. Barbara Jardin of Montreal also went under the standard clocking 1:59.25. Both had qualified Wednesday in the 400 freestyle with the same 1-2 finish. "This is exactly what I wanted to this meet," said Cheverton. "I couldnt have dreamed of having a better performance with best times and making the team. Having made the team initially in the 400 freestyle (on Wednesday) relieved a lot of pressure for tonight. I really wanted to win so bad." In the mens 200 freestyle, Colin Russell of Oakville withstood a strong challenge from Calgarys Chad Bobrosky to win in 1:49.18. With the win, Russell gets to swim the event at worlds and Bobrosky and Blake Worsley of Victoria in third qualify for the relay. "Its great to get that win in the 200 but Im also pleased to see the young guys putting the heat on me," said Russell. "It took everything I had to get my hand on that wall. I was really impressed to see Chad so close to me, I just caught him in the corner of my eye near the end the race." Jillian Tyler of Calgary posted another personal best time to win the 50 breaststroke to cap a solid performance this week. "Ive done a lot of racing in the last month and half and to get the win and a best time is a great confidence booster," said Tyler, who won the 100 breaststroke Thursday to earn her world team nomination. "I really got some motivation going into the rest of the summer." Warren Barnes of Toronto won the mens 50 breaststroke. The 50 breaststrokes are not team qualifying events. "It was a great swim for me only 0.2 off my best," Barnes said. "I really wished I could have made the world team. Still this is a good way to head into the next part of the season." With the way Carolina is playing right now, it is going to take more than a change in plans to throw off the Hurricanes rhythm. Jordan Staal had a goal and three assists, and Jeff Skinner extended his offensive surge with a goal and an assist to lead the Hurricanes to a 6-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night. It was Carolinas fifth consecutive win. "That game cancelled in Buffalo gave us an extra day or two of rest," Muller said. "I think it really helped us. We had fresh legs and everyone contributing." John-Michael Liles, Patrick Dwyer, Zach Boychuk and Elias Lindholm also scored for the Hurricanes. Liles was playing against his former team for the first time -- Carolina sent defenceman Tim Gleason to Toronto for Liles on Jan. 1. "Its just nice to be wanted and to feel like I have a place," Liles said. "It allows me to be confident and play my game. I think we have a great group of guys on the team -- theyve welcomed me, and its been a nice fit so far." Skinners goal was his 17th in his last 17 games, and he improved his point streak to a career-high six games, with seven goals and five assists in that stretch. Lindholm had three points in his first game back with Carolina after playing for Sweden in the World Junior Championship. Anton Khudobin made 25 saves for the Hurricanes to improve his record to 6-0-0. Khudobin missed more than two months earlier this season with an ankle injury. "This game was, by far, the easiest game," Khudobin said. Joffrey Lupul scored for the Maple Leafs. James Reimer made 30 saves. Toronto has lost three in a row by a combined score of 18-5 after defeating Detroit in the Winter Classic on New Years Day. "We are standing still," Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. "We are watchingg teams skate.dddddddddddd We are not engaged in the hockey game at the level that is required to give ourselves a chance at success." The Hurricanes took immediate control of the game. Boychuk opened the scoring 2:33 in, when his backhand shot deflected off the stick of Gleason and beat Reimer. It was Boychuks first goal of the year. The Hurricanes made it 2-0 exactly 6 minutes later following a long stretch of sustained pressure on the power play. The puck eventually got to Lindholm, who set up Staal for a one-timer in the slot. Reimer stopped that shot, but Skinner cleaned up the rebound. Following lopsided losses to the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders in its previous two games, Toronto appeared lethargic for much of the night, but the Maple Leafs did manage to close the deficit to 2-1 a little less than 6 minutes after Skinners goal. Mason Raymond won the puck on the forecheck behind the Hurricanes net and centred to Lupul, who scored from the top of the crease. Carolina reclaimed its two-goal lead with 2:27 left in the first period on Dwyers goal. After another long stretch of offensive zone pressure, Dwyer scored when his wrist shot through traffic went through Reimers legs. "Youve just got to find a way to make a save there to keep your team in it," Reimer said. The Hurricanes then made the score 4-1 early in the second when Liles scored on a snap shot on a 3-on-1 break. It was the first goal for the defenceman since he was traded to Carolina. Staal added a short-handed goal 25 seconds into the third period, and Lindholm finished the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal in the final 70 seconds. NOTES: Carolina played its second straight game without captain Eric Staal, who has a lower-body injury. ... The Hurricanes were playing for the first time since Sunday after Tuesdays game in Buffalo was postponed because of a blizzard. ... Gleason was honoured with a video montage in the first period and received a hearty ovation from the crowd.
