There are two different types of file formats - bitmap and vector drawing. Bitmaps is the most basic of formats with each image consisting of individual pixels. This format is used most often with photographs and images that contain subtle shadows.

However, there is a problem with bitmap images, the image magnification. This is due to enlargement of individual pixels become more pronounced, leading to an irregular appearance. There is a possibility to improve this using a technique called anti-aliasing, which acts to smooth the graph, however, this still will result in an irregular aspect that the image is expanded once again. Again, this can be improved by increasing the image resolution, however, this makes the problem of making the file larger and therefore slower to load.

Programs that produce these files are Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro and Corel Photo Paint, file formats including BMP, GIF, JPEG, JPG, PNG, PICT (Macintosh), PCX, TIFF and PSD. The most popular output formats of these web pages are GIF and JPEG, the first because of her ability to compress files and thus speed up the loading time, the JPEG, since it allows a wide range of colors.
